Hydroxyapatite-Coated Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty -Minimum two year clinical and

Kong In-Deok
Abstract
Because of osteoconductive properties, plasma sprayed coating of Hydroxyapatite are biocompatible and may cotribute to the early fixation of total join prosthesis. And so 54 hips(48 patients) who had Landos Euroform total joint hip replacement, a
system
in which femoral stem are plasma sprayed Hydroxyapatite coated during the period from January 1992 to March 1993 were studied prospectively about clinical and radiological result.
The femoral componets have been followed for a minimum of 23 months and an average 29 months. Harris hip score averaged 94 at most recent follow up intervals. At the last follow up, the pain and limp was remained in 5 cases(9%) respectively and
only
slightly to mild in mostly. Although thigh pain has been occured in 5 cases(9%), all patients had not trouble in daily activity.
In radiological evaluation, there was a rapid and good endosteal bone formation of implants with bone apposition on the Gruen zone 2 and 6 of HA coating area. No radiolucent line foramtion was detected around HA coated implant part. No
reoperation
were
necessary for failure of fixation or change in position or loosening of stem. No reontgenographic signs such as progressive radiolucency, component migration and loosening have not occured.
The result of the study indicate that this Hydroxyapatite coated femoral component can provide satisfactory clinical and radiological result. Futher prospective follow up is necessary to detemine whether the favorable early result of this implant
are
maintained over longer period.
